Welcome

I am a commuting cyclist and set up this site in April 2010 to share my city centre cycling experience with you. It is vastly frustrating trying to safely negotiate Newcastle by bike. Buses, taxis, a forest of traffic lights, road conditions, recessed gullies, lack of vision and strategic planning... the list is endless. I strongly believe though that there is great potential to improve the cycling infrastructure in the centre and by doing so making it accessible to more cyclists, which will lead to safer conditions. Safety in numbers. "We can break this vicious cycle", are currently my famous last words. In my opinion, policies and strategies are in place but it is the application and implementation that is currently lagging behind. With a bit of elbow grease [read : people power - survey and analysis] and some multipurpose lubricant [read : persuasion power] we will get there. By speaking to cyclists and through the survey, I was able to collect an astounding array of extremely insightful and valuable information. Together with our city councillors and council officers, it's now in our hands to turn your ideas, feedback and comments into reality for you - all 800 petition supporters - and our city. The petition was officially handed over to Newcastle City Council in June 2010, but more is needed. And we have formed the Newcastle Cycling Campaign which is now the cycling community's 'vehicle' to make Newcastle truly cycle-friendly. One loud voice. Come on board and join the movement! Because together we can make it happen. The full version of the petition report is listed below. Links will open in a separate window. |
