MINUTES OF THE SAGSA MEETING

Meeting started with the introductions by the participants and the explanation of the FIU Sociology and Anthropology graduate web page.

It continued with the report from the treasurer (Ricky). We have $560 at the moment. For this semester we are planning to do one colloquium ($112), three workshops ($112), a Meet and Greet event ($112) and four SAGSA meetings.

This report led to the discussion of the funding of SAGSA. Emily explained that we get the money by organizing the SAGSA meetings, GSA meetings, workshops and helping organize the gradskellers.

The gradskellers are going to be on September 16th, October 13th, November 19th and December 1st. They are held between 5 and 10 in the afternoon. We decided that we will create a calendar of the events so the students can sign up for attending them.

Elizabeth explained the procedures for funding the research from the GSA. She emphasized that they are only paying for the plane ticket and the registration. She also mentioned that GSA is without any money and in a period of restructuring (just got a new board).

Christine Winter explained that in the spring the GSA will have a scholarly forum, where students can present their research work.

Francisco Sastre was voted as a second GSA representative.

We assigned the volunteers for the meet and greet for this Friday at 2:30 PM. Dusan, Alex and Christine volunteered for buying the food and drinks (snacks and fruit). We also decided for the teams of people that will be in charge of setting up and cleaning after the meeting.

We discussed the colloquia and decided that we should really encourage the students to be there. The dates for the colloquia are 7th October (Dr. Maria Aysa) and 4th of November (Students presentations or Debate).

After that we discussed the ideas for the workshops. We decided that for September we will do the book club (We will decide on the book on Thursday. If anybody has a proposal for what we should read next they should e-mail Emily Eisenhouer.)

For October, Christine and Jasney (in association with the Career Services) will do the CV workshop.

For November 15th Dusan and Emily Houge will do the workshop on Summer Opportunities.

Next meeting is on September 13th at 2 PM.

We had a discussion on the bureaucratic requirements for the new track of the PhD. We realized that we really do not know what the requirements that we need to fulfill to progress through the program are.

We decided that Tricia will attend the September 15th GSA mandatory meeting.

The last thing we discussed were the possible options for the social events that SAGSA will organize for its students. Bri proposed that, early in October, we should have a party on the beach in a place called the “roof top.” We also decided that we should invite other departments to this party.

We also agreed that we should meet next Friday (the ninth) for the happy hour at Monty’s in Coral Gables.
